Shooting Workshop
Saturday, October 11, 2008
Target shooting is a challenging skill sport that, like any eye-hand coordination sport, is a lot of fun. AFW’s Shooting Workshop uses the facilities and the experienced instructors of the Easton Fish and Game Association. Safety rules and general orientation are followed by one-on-one instruction as you actively use rifles and handguns. This workshop accommodates those who have no knowledge of guns as well as those with advanced skill. Experienced shooters enjoy getting in a lot of practice in a short amount of time. New shooters appreciate the one-on-one attention of the patient instructors. All equipment is provided

Woodswoman 101 Worksop
Saturday, November 1, 2008
If you know that a compass always points North, but don’t know how having this information will help you find your way out of the woods; if you don’t understand how the contour lines on a map will help you determine if a particular hike is suitable, or if, when you fill your pack you don’t feel confident that you have what you need should an emergency arise, come join professional educators Mary and Priscilla as they take you through the basics of hiking in their workshop, Woodswoman 101.
What will be covered:
• Hiking basics of sanitation, what to pack, what to wear, what to eat and ‘water, water, water.’
• How to read and understand a trail map: legend, contour lines, scale and compass rose.
• How to use a compass and trail map together to figure out where you are.
• How to read trail blazes and cairns.
• Some common concerns: ticks, and snakes, and bears, and bees ‘oh my.’
The first part of the day will be hands-on classroom instruction and discussion. The second part of the day will be a challenge hike where you will be able to put your newly acquired skills to the test. Participants will come away with a new level of woods wisdom and confidence, in addition to a certificate of completion.

Nordic Walking Workshop
Saturday, November 15, 2008
On Saturday, March 21st, Lynn DeLancey and her daughters, Gena Panno and Marisa Huber (all certified personal trainers), will lead participants in a one-hour Nordic walking workshop at either Wyckoff Environmental Center or, in case of inclement weather, St. Alban’s Church in Oakland. Nordic walking uses poles to work the upper body while you walk, and increases your heart rate without increasing your perceived rate of exertion. It works the arms, shoulders, upper chest and back muscles, stretching and lengthening them. Afterwards we’ll walk through the Center’s Nature Trails.
FEE: $10 (members $5)
LOCATION: Wyckoff Environmental Center or St. Alban's Church
DATE: Saturday, November 15, 2008

Orienteering Meet for Novices and "Old Hands"
Sunday, November 23, 2008
Many AFW members have completed the Orienteering Workshop. The Orienteering Meet answers the request for more -- more map work, more application, more orienteering. Both experienced and novice orienteering enthusiasts are welcome to participate.
The Meet begins and ends at Tiorati Circle in Harriman State Park. Beginners and those in need of a brief refresher should arrive at 9:30AM for instruction in the basic skills. Other participants should arrive between 10:00AM and 11:00AM to receive maps, cue sheets, compasses if they need to borrow one, punch cards and start times.
At the appointed start time, participants, as individuals or in small groups, begin to find the specific locations that are shown on the map. Once a “control” is found, participants mark their punch card and then move to the next control. When all of the controls have been found, participants return to Tiorati Circle and their finish time is recorded. If participants decide not to complete the course, they still must return to Tiorati Circle to confirm that they are safely out of the woods. At the end of the day, prizes will be awarded in several categories.
FEE: Beginners: $25 (members $15)
Experienced: $20 (members $10)
LOCATION: Tiorati Circle, Harriman State Park
DATE: Sunday, November 23, 2008
TIME: Beginners and refreshers: 9:30 AM – 3 PM
Experienced: 10 AM - 3 PM
