The Adirondacks
Hiking the High or Low Peaks and Literature
Friday, August 6 - Monday, August 9, 2010
What better time to think of summer than when it’s still chilly outside. In other words, it’s time to start getting ready for a summer weekend of hiking and book talk in the glorious Adirondack Mountains! Our hikes will be one or two moderate to moderately strenuous hikes each day done at a leisurely pace, often with options for those looking for something less challenging. We will also offer a day of high peak hiking for those interested.
Adventurous women know what it is like to move out of their comfort zones and challenge themselves with new experiences. Whether it's scaling a mountain or moving to a new country or school, people change and grow when they try new things. The books selected for this year's 'Dacks weekend are about people who have chosen to move up, out and on.
- A Gate at the Stairs by Lorrie Moore is the story of 20-year-old Tassie Keltijin who takes a position as a mother's helper during her first year as a student in a mid-western college town and finds herself embroiled in the lives of people who are different from any she has known before.
- Brooklyn by Colm Toibin is the story of a young Irish girl's adjustment to life in Brooklyn shortly after the end of the second world war.
- A Short History of Women by Kate Walbert tells the story of the Townsend women through several generations of life, love and women's rights.
- BONUS BOOK: The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, by Sherman Alexie chronicles a young Seattle Indian's journey off the reservation and into the mainstream world. This book is short, funny, filled with cartoons and absolutely delightful.
Please note that the books are used as a springboard for an hour-long discussion each day. It's not necessary to read all, or for that matter, any of them. So, if you can't fit in the reading, don't let that stop you from joining us on this wonderful weekend.
The price includes 3 nights double, or possibly, triple occupancy rooms, shared baths, hiker breakfasts, and fix-your-own bag lunches at the charming Mountain B & B.
