The Adirondacks

Hiking the High or Low Peaks and Literature

Friday, August 8 - Monday, August 11, 2008

What's better than a summer weekend of hiking in the glorious Adirondack Mountains? How about four days of challenging hiking and lively book talk? Our hikes will be one or two moderate to moderately strenuous hikes each day done at a leisurely pace, often with options for those looking for something less challenging. We will also offer a day of high peak hiking for those interested -- this year we're planning on hiking Mt. Marcy, the 'Dacks' highest.

While the readings for this year's 'Dacks trip are set in different worlds and time periods, each provides insight into the human heart.

Please note that the books are used as a springboard for an hour-long discussion each day. It's not necessary to read all, or for that matter, any of them. So, if you can't fit in the reading, don't let that stop you form joining us on this wonderful weekend.

The price includes 3 nights double, or possibly, triple occupancy rooms, shared baths, hiker breakfasts, and fix-your-own bag lunches at the charming Mountain B & B.

Please register by June 15, 2008.

FEE: $400 (members $350)
DEPOSIT: $100 due with registration. Non-refundable after June 15, 2008
NON-REFUNDABLE BALANCE: $300 (members $250) due by July 15, 2008

Exploring Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania's Grand Canyon and Ricketts Glen

Friday, October 17 - Sunday, October 19, 2008

Come join AFW as we explore the north-central part of Pennsylvania. We'll be staying in the quaint town of Wellsboro, PA, about three hours by car from the Delaware Water Gap, where we'll see gas-lit streets and Victorian mansions dating back to the early 1800s. On Friday afternoon and Saturday, we'll explore the Pine Creek Gorge, almost 50 miles long and over 1,000 feet deep, also known as the Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania. It offers spectacular views, abundant wildlife and, typically in October, a brilliant fall display of deep reds, yellows and purples. On Sunday, we will hike in Ricketts Glen. We will take the Falls Trail and explore the Glens, which boasts a series of wild, free-flowing waterfalls, each cascading through rock-strewn clefts in this ancient hillside. The 94-foot Ganoga Falls is the highest of 22 named waterfalls. All hiking on this weekend is moderate in difficulty and at a moderate pace.

The price includes a shared room with two queen-sized beds and a simple continental breakfast (coffee and instant oatmeal). Lunch, dinner, and a more hearty breakfast (there is a Dunkin' Donuts across the street from the motel) are additional. Each room has a refrigerator and microwave.

The trip is limited to 16 people. If you have questions, contact either Dagi at dagimur@aol.com or Judy at malsbury@patmedia.net

Carpooling opportunities will be arranged after registration is closed. Please register by July 31, 2008.

FEE: $250 (members $200)
DEPOSIT: $100 due with registration. Non-refundable after July 31, 2008
NON-REFUNDABLE BALANCE: $150 (members $100) due by August 31, 2008

Weekend in the Catskills

Friday, May 8 - Sunday, May 10, 2009

Come join us as we explore the Indian Head Wilderness and North Lake Areas of the northeastern Catskill Mountains. We will be hiking in a different region of the Catskills than we’ve done before. Here we will see where the grand Catskills' hotels once stood.

We will do a moderate hike on Friday afternoon and Sunday morning and your choice of a moderate or a strenuous hike on Saturday. There is a possible option for those who decide to skip the Sunday hike to tour a Buddhist monastery.

The fee includes a shared room for two nights at the Sun View Motel in Tannersville. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are additional. Most rooms have a refrigerator.

Please register by March 15, 2009.
