City Paths are our day excursions to the parks, museums and neighborhoods of our metropolitan areas. Led by AFW members and an experienced trip coordinator, City Paths are our “urban hikes.” A day of walking and sightseeing often includes a lunch or dinner in a local restaurant.

It's All About Brooklyn

Sunday, October 26, 2008

Come with us to explore the various neighborhoods of Brooklyn with Cynthia, an AFW member who grew up there. We’ll walk through the charming, tree-lined streets of Brooklyn Heights to the Promenade with views of South Street Seaport and the Lower Manhattan skyline. We’ll have time to peek into the funky shops and restaurants along Montague Street. We’ll include a visit to DUMBO (Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass), and if time permits, a stroll through Carroll Gardens.

Primarily a manufacturing district, DUMBO became residential as artists and others seeking large, inexpensive loft spaces for studios and homes began moving there in the late 1970s. The acronym DUMBO was coined in 1978 by residents who hoped such an unattractive name would help deter developers. Instead, DUMBO has grown in popularity. Here we’ll visit Teuschers’ chocolates, and the Fulton Ferry Landing on the East River.

Carroll Gardens, a long-standing Italian-American neighborhood of family-run stores, is now sprinkled with cafes, boutiques and antique shops. Front "gardens" were created in 1846 to the brownstone houses in the oldest section of the neighborhood. These brownstones are set back from the street by 30-40 feet, atypical for Brooklyn. The Carroll Gardens Historic District includes some of the finest examples of these brownstones with large front gardens and is bounded roughly by Carroll Street to the south, President Street to the north, Hoyt Street to the east and Smith Street to the west.

Lunch will be at a local restaurant
